Here’s another fancy hotel bar we could have skipped if we wanted, according to our rules, but we decided to tick off anyway. It’s quite swish, with fancy lighting, “designer” furniture, table service and expensive drinks.
Typical of a Tuesday night, it was quite quiet, but not quite empty, just a few well dressed couples, probably hotel guests. Despite its poshness, the staff were very friendly and welcoming, and weren’t at all discouraged by my relatively scruffy appearance (shorts, trainers, cycling gear). Our ears were soothed by not-quite-lift-music, dancy, deep house tunes.
Peroni, Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted and Schiehallion, Guinness and “St Andrews Smooth”, whatever that is.
Numerous cocktails from £11.
Pints were all £5 or over, but we got free nuts and very tasty popcorn.
There’s a bar menu with mains starting from £12.50, burger £14, fish and chips £13.50 etc.
This from Iain: “of all the posh hotels in town, Baloral’s toilets are the worst; both toilets in the gents had major skid-marks and the seats were uncomfortable. However, they did smell pleasant.”
Officially nowt, but you can definitely see it from the other side of the hotel, so perhaps actually a “yes” on a technicality. You can’t see it from the bar.
