#179: The Chanter, Bread Street, Edinburgh

The Chanter, Bread Street, Edinburgh (exterior)

It was strange being back in here, an old haunt from uni days, though back then it was a Hogshead pub and full of students. It’s barely recognisable though, having been entirely revamped at some point in the intervening decade or more. Relatively well presented, if a little contrived and busy-looking, you can expect assorted chairs, assorted floor coverings, assorted lamp shades, assorted wallpapers, pictures, mirrors, knick-knacks on the walls, puggy machines, several TVs and fake wooden beams. It’s also really quite large.

The Chanter, Bread Street, Edinburgh (interior) This visit was pretty quiet, quite normal for a Tuesday night. Considering how cheap the food is though, I’d have expected it to be a bit busier. There were a few business types in and some relative youngsters up the back. I think it’s still leaning studentwards in general.

It’s a Stonegate pub, along with the other ex-Hogshead on Rose Street, now the Amber Rose (though that’s still closed due to a fire last year). The Living Room on George Street is also part of the family along with the Slug & Lettuce chain and Scream pubs.

The Bar

On cask: Caledonian Deuchars X 2, Stewart’s SRA, Inveralmond Ossian, Strathaven Old Mortality. Kegs: Guinness, Carling, Tennent’s Lager, Becks Vier, Stella Artois, John Smith, Magners, Strongbow.

A pint of Ossian was £3.45.

Pretty cheap. 7 burgers from £6.45 to £8.45, mains £5.95 to £9.95. Some meals are on special offer, £8.45 for two from a list of about 10 pub classics. There’s also “burger and a drink” for £6.95, and most cask beers are included (anything under 4.3% ABV).

Castle View

The Chanter, Bread Street, Edinburgh (castle view from inside)The full “hokey cokey” (you can see the castle from inside and outside), and in fact one of the best views yet.
