#136: Bar Kohl, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh

Bar Kohl, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh (exterior)

Update, March 2015: refitted and reopened as Slighhouse, still with the Shilling Group.

Bar Kohl is a vodka and cocktail bar but with more than a hint of pub about it. Contemporary touches like brick walls, plain mirrors and carefully lit displays of vodka bottles bump up against a long wooden bar, original cornices, old church pews and well-loved tables.

What you see in the photo below is just half of the premises. There is the same amount of space next door but they had closed it off on this quiet Tuesday night. It was picking up though with only a couple of tables free when we left. Punters were in their 20s and 30s.

As part of The Shilling Group, Bar Kohl is stable-mates with Thomson’s Bar, The Fountain and The Golden Rule.

The Bar

Bar Kohl, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh (interior, bar)

Kegs only, Vedette Extra Blonde, Estrella Damm, Williams Joker IPA, Tennent’s Lager, Brooklyn Lager, Aspall Cyder, Rekorderlig Strawberry and Lime.

Bottles of the usual suspects plus Sierra Nevada Pale, Anchor Steam, Goose Island Honkers Ale, Brew Dog 5AM Saint and Camden.

£21.60 for 5 pints of Joker and a Tennent’s shandy, so somewhere between £3.60 and £4 a pint.

Food

Burgers were pretty good and perhaps the biggest range yet with 25 to choose from (£6.75 to £11). Nachos good too by all accounts (£7.50), but no danger of pipping 52 Canoes for the top prize.

Castle View

Nope.
