Certainly the sexiest bar of the night, 56 North is big on cocktails and gin, but still has a surprisingly large selection of beers on tap, and without a Tennent’s or Guinness in sight.
Inside it’s got low-ish lighting, pale wood, neutral colours (except for the fancy lighting at the bar), and an impressive array of whisky and spirits (mostly gin?). There were enough punters to make it not feel empty, but at 11pm on a Saturday I might have expected more. There were a good few empty tables still, though the student holidays may account for that. The staff seemed to be enjoying themselves.
By the time we got here, Westy had been banging on about getting a pina colada for some time. I’m sure I ordered a beer, but when our drinks arrived they all looked and tasted very pineappley. My second cocktail of the night after the Ladyboy in McSorleys.
According to my notes it’s an all-keg affair: Williams Caesar Augustus, Joker IPA and Draught, Innis & Gunn Original and Lager, Peroni, Inveralmond Ossian, Blue Moon. Since I was more than merry by this point, the list is not necessarily complete. Looking at their online drinks menu, there are 9 taps, so I’ve missed 1, probably Williams Black Ball Stout.
£3.95 per piña colada, remarkably cheap for a cocktail. The cocktail menu (see their website) is quite extensive and we just happened to pick one of the cheapest, the prices range from £4 up to around £10.
Looking at their online menu it looks like mains are around £10-£13, burgers from £8 to £10. There are various deals like two mains for £10 each, midweek specials, lunch deals, brunch etc.
