Doctors is relatively large for Edinburgh, and quite busy, though that may be down to the pre-Christmas build-up (see How to go to the pub for some sage advice on that subject, but beware of the strong language). Doug and Amy managed to get here early enough to bag us a table, but by the time we left there were quite a few people standing. The best thing is the large selection of cask beers, most of which were Scottish.
Across the road is Edinburgh University’s Medical School which I presume is where the name comes from. It’s been called Doctors for as long as I can remember. These days it’s another Taylor Walker pub along with The Grosvenor, Milnes, The Beehive and The Malt Shovel. Taylor Walker is one brand within the Spirit Pub Company.
Pretty good choice of cask beers with 10 pumps: Stewart’s #3, Stewart’s #3 Coffee Infused, Loch Ness Festive Ness, Broughton Bramling Cross, Stewart’s Cascade, Tyne Bank Black Cascade, Fyne Ales Holly Daze, Scottish Borders Wild Harvest, Edinburgh Brewing EPA, Stewart’s Advent. Kegs: Carling, Staropramen, Stella Artois, Tennent’s Lager, John Smiths, Becks Vier, Caledonia Best, Guinness and Aspall Cyder.
It was around £3.65 per pint.
The menu’s the same or near enough to the usual Taylor Walker offerings. 8 different burgers from £7 to £11, a few variations on fish and chips from £7 to £11, cheapish “pub favourites” from £6.50 to £10, and a bunch of other mains from £6.50 to £10. We didn’t eat here though, so no opinions to share.
