This is a medium sized bar aiming for the sports crowd, also doing live music and stand-up comedy. It’s split over two levels with the bar, puggies and pool tables on the upper level and a bunch of largeish tables down a few steps. The live acts play at the far end of the lower level.
There’s very little information about the place on the web, but it used to be the “Footlights & Firkin”, one of the now defunct Firkin Pubs, a chain of brewpubs across the UK, US, Canada and elsewhere. I don’t think this one brewed its own beer, but can’t vouch for the Physician & Firkin out by the Commonwealth Pool (now the much more up-market Salisbury Arms, but still Mitchells & Butlers). I remember them both being a bit grotty in my student days. There’s a brief history of the Firkin pubs here: “What Happened to the Firkin Pubs”.
Two casks, Caledonian Deuchars and Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted. On keg: Hoegaarden, Staropramen, Stella Artois, Amstel, Tennent’s Lager, and probably Guinness.
Yet again, no notes on the price of the round. Must try harder…
Mains all around £8, pub classics like fish and chips, haggis, macaroni cheese, sausage and mash, curry etc. Also burgers and kebabs (the skewer variety, not doner).
There are two quite small pool tables. On our visit (a Tuesday) there was live music, a local boy singing acoustic covers. There’s regular comedy too according to the facebook page.
There’s a big screen that was showing football while we were in plus a bunch more TVs around the place.
Yes, you can see the castle easily from outside the pub.
